When we think of confidence, we tend to imagine someone walking tall with an air of external empowerment that oozes from them. Maybe someone who has a particular body type or carries their body in a particular way and I'm here to tell you, that isnt necessary true confidence because TRUE CONFIDENCE cannot be externally generated.
Yes you can boost how you feel with how you look, items you own or how you carry yourself but they are cheap methods of superficial confidence. Stay with me....
True confidence is generated with our eyes shut and our hearts open, its through a feelig of safety in the body. When we feel safe internally, we mirror that externally.
Therefore, when we are regulated (meaning our nervous system is settled), this generates a feeling of safety in our environment which boosts out trust and confidence in ourselves. Confidence comes from having such grounded trust & a feeling of safety in yourself & your body that its unshakable...from that place confidence naturally arises in you.
Somatics is a practice that focuses on the mind-body connection, helping you become more aware of how your body moves, feels, and reacts in different situations. By cultivating this awareness, somatics can significantly boost your confidence in several ways:
Increased Body Awareness: Somatic practices help you tune into your body and its sensations. By learning to recognise where you hold tension, stress, or discomfort, you can consciously release these patterns. This heightened awareness of your body allows you to feel more grounded and comfortable in your own skin, which directly influences your confidence.
Better Posture: Many somatic techniques focus on improving posture, which has a direct impact on how others perceive you and how you feel about yourself. Standing tall with an open chest and aligned spine can make you feel more powerful and self-assured, influencing your interactions with others and the way you carry yourself.
Stress Reduction: Somatic practices often involve breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and movement. These methods help lower stress and anxiety, which can be major barriers to confidence. By reducing the tension that comes from stress, you can think more clearly, make decisions with ease, and engage in social or professional situations with more poise.
Emotional Regulation: Somatics teaches you to tune into your emotions and physical sensations in a non-judgmental way. This practice can help you process and regulate emotions like fear, insecurity, and doubt, making it easier to stay composed and confident, even in challenging situations.
Empowerment Through Movement: Many somatic exercises involve conscious movement, which helps you connect with your body in a way that fosters a sense of agency. When you feel more in control of your physical movements, it can create a ripple effect, increasing your overall sense of self-efficacy and confidence.
Reduced Self-Criticism: Through somatics, you develop a greater sense of acceptance and compassion for yourself. This reduces the inner critic that often undermines self-confidence. With regular practice, you learn to treat your body and mind with kindness, fostering a more positive self-image.
By integrating somatic practices into your routine, you cultivate a sense of embodied confidence that extends beyond mere appearance, helping you feel strong, calm, and capable in all areas of life.
